Our Impact: Powering Communities

At ESA, our ambition extends beyond powering the grid to empowering communities. We believe that world-class energy projects should generate more than just power; they should be a catalyst for positive, lasting change in the communities we serve. This commitment is woven into every stage of development, ensuring we create economic opportunities, foster inclusivity, and empower local voices.

Nkhoma, Malawi: A Partnership in Action

In Nkhoma, our philosophy is already delivering tangible results. Through early and transparent engagement, we have built strong relationships with local leaders and community members, earning their trust and support. Our project is not only set to boost the local economy but is already investing in the community’s well-being while respecting traditional customs.

Here’s how we are making a difference today:

Investing in Livelihoods, September 2022

We provided dedicated financial literacy training to all Project Affected Persons (PAPs), empowering them to invest in their futures. Follow-up with farmers  show significantly improved income and welfare for many, with successful investments in new ventures.

Fair Wages & Local Employment, February - August 2024

For the construction of our project fence and gatehouse, we stipulated that 80% of the labour be sourced from the local community, with at least 40% of workers being women. We ensured that all workers received equal pay for equal work, and that it was in line with the statutory requirements.

A Voice for the Community, March 2024

To ensure open communication and accountability, we facilitated the establishment of a Community Grievance Committee in line with International Standards. This 10-member committee, with equal numbers of women and menn, provides a formal, impartial platform for community members to raise concerns so that  every voice is heard.

Relief & Donation of PPE, April - May 2025

We engaged a gender-balanced team from the local community for site vegetation clearance. Workers received a fair wage for part-time work during the lean season, helping families purchase food. Furthermore, all provided PPE (work suits, gumboots, and tools) were gifted to the workers for future use, providing a longer-term asset.

This is just the beginning. Our commitment to the people of Malawi will continue long into the future, building a legacy of shared prosperity.
